Norit

Norit was acquired by Fund V in June 2007.

Founded in 1918, Norit is a leading supplier of clean technologies and components for purification and filtration systems. Under Doughty Hanson’s ownership, Norit, which currently has administrative offices in Texas, USA, initially operated through two divisions: Activated Carbon and Clean Process Technologies.

The Clean Process Technologies division, which focuses on purification and filtration systems for the water and beverages markets as well as the food and chemical industries, was sold to Pentair in May 2011.

Norit is the world’s largest producer of activated carbon and related services. The company has grown to produce over 150 different formulations of activated carbon for more than 3,000 customers worldwide. One notable application, whose significance has grown following a change in regulations in the US, is the removal of mercury from coal-fired utility flue gas.

Norit continues to invest in R&D and capacity expansion throughout its businesses in response to the demand from its end markets. Doughty Hanson has been working with Norit’s management to help coordinate capacity expansion programmes including the construction of new furnaces in Texas.
